This is a reception class for Kaka Street Base School. These young students have High or Very High needs. There is a high staff to pupil ratio which allows for both individual and small group instruction in the vital beginning school years.
The class has easy access to the expertise and advice from a team of specialists, who work alongside staff with students as required and provide programmes as part of the students’ learning.
Also readily available and timetabled for several sessions each week is the onsite heated swimming pool and sensory room.
Communication: The development of communication in order to be able to exchange feelings, ideas and intentions is one of the main focuses for this class as it is often the most challenging task facing parents and others working with these young children.
There are several programmes used to actively involve communication learning across the curriculum.
Intensive Interaction (I.I.)
This deals with the progression of interaction through simple ‘encounter’ to active ‘involvement’. Students are encouraged to actively work with others and to develop thinking skills.
Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS.)
This programme uses physical exchange of items to teach the child to initiate communication.
The weekly timetable includes;
Gross Motor
Sessions at a local gym, water therapy and swimming skill development, Riding for the Disabled, Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP) riding modified bikes and a daily fitness and flexibility programme.
Sensory/fine motor skills
Messy play experiences, art and craft skill opportunities, sensory experiences and music.
Sherborne Developmental Programme
This programme is designed to support the development of social engagement through two basic objectives –
Awareness of self
Awareness of others
The programme in Room 4 is designed to help each student to develop his or her individual strengths and abilities as fully as possible.
